It's not just where you are. It's how close everything is once you're here.
Latitude sits in the centre of Cantanhede, and from this one address the whole region opens up. You're half an hour from Coimbra and Aveiro, an hour from Porto, two from Lisbon. Vineyards, forest and ocean are all minutes apart. Unpack once, and let the Bairrada come to you.
Some wine regions everyone knows. The Bairrada is not quite one of them, and perhaps that is its charm. It lies between Coimbra and Aveiro, with the Atlantic close by and clay-limestone soils that give its wines a character you won't mistake for anywhere else.
Small in size, large in reputation, and growing year after year.
The region makes around 60% of all of Portugal's traditional-method sparkling wine, and was one of the first in the country to master it. Traditional method is the same craft as Champagne: once bottled, the wine ferments a second time inside the bottle, for months.
That patience is where the fine, persistent bead comes from, and that aroma of freshly baked bread. You taste it in every glass.

Made mostly from the region's white grapes: Bical, Maria Gomes (also called Fernão Pires), Cercial and Arinto. Fresh, elegant and full of life.

The region's queen grape. Baga ripens late and keeps its acidity, which makes it demanding, and gives intense, structured reds that can age for decades. The good ones are worth the wait.

From the same grapes as the sparkling, for those who prefer something lighter at the table. Crisp, mineral and easy to love.
And the perfect partner to it all: leitão à Bairrada, suckling pig roasted in a wood oven until the skin crackles, one of Portugal's most loved dishes.
A centuries-old woodland with a palace hidden among the trees, one of central Portugal's most beautiful sights.
Wide sands like Praia da Tocha, around twenty minutes from the house.
Thermal towns made for slowing the pace, with mineral waters famous across Portugal.
The country's oldest university city, and the "Venice of Portugal" with its canals and moliceiro boats. Both half an hour away.
Cantanhede's biggest annual event, and one of the largest in the country each summer, is about ten minutes on foot from the house.
All of this tastes better aboard a classic. Stay with us, and let Vinhalva take you from our door to the vineyards, the region as it was seventy years ago.
